Installation of Sanitary Fittings, Inspection and Testing of Water Supply System

Sanitary fittings play an important role in modern plumbing systems. These fittings are installed in bathrooms, kitchens, and other areas to supply clean water and remove wastewater safely. Proper installation of sanitary fittings ensures comfort, hygiene, and efficient use of water in buildings. After installation, the water supply system must be inspected and tested to confirm that it is working correctly without leakage or defects. For plumbers and technicians, knowledge of installation, inspection, and testing is essential for maintaining a reliable water supply system.

Sanitary Fittings

Sanitary fittings are plumbing fixtures used for washing, bathing, cleaning, and sanitation purposes. These fittings are connected to water supply lines and drainage systems. They are designed to provide safe and convenient use of water in residential, commercial, and public buildings.

Sanitary fittings are usually made from materials such as ceramic, stainless steel, plastic, or porcelain. These materials are durable, easy to clean, and resistant to corrosion.

Common Types of Sanitary Fittings

  • Wash Basin: Used for washing hands and face.
  • Water Closet (WC): Used for toilet purposes.
  • Urinal: Installed mainly in public washrooms for men.
  • Bath Tub: Used for bathing.
  • Kitchen Sink: Used for washing utensils and food preparation.
  • Shower: Used for bathing with a controlled water flow.
  • Bidet: Used for personal hygiene in some bathrooms.

All these fittings must be installed properly to ensure smooth operation and maintain hygiene.

Preparation Before Installation

Before installing sanitary fittings, the plumber must carefully check the plumbing layout and ensure that water supply pipes and drainage pipes are correctly placed. Measurements should be taken accurately to ensure proper positioning of fittings.

The following points should be considered before installation:

  • Correct position and height of the fitting.
  • Availability of water supply connection.
  • Proper drainage outlet.
  • Availability of required tools and materials.
  • Ensuring the floor and wall surfaces are properly finished.

Installation of Wash Basin

The wash basin is usually installed in bathrooms and wash areas. It may be wall-mounted or placed on a pedestal. The installation involves fixing brackets to the wall, placing the basin securely, and connecting the water supply and drainage pipes.

The waste outlet pipe from the basin is connected to the trap, which prevents foul gases from entering the room. The tap or faucet is installed on the basin and connected to the water supply line.

Installation of Water Closet (WC)

The water closet is installed in toilets and connected to the soil pipe or drainage system. The WC pan is fixed firmly on the floor using cement mortar or bolts. A flush tank or flushing valve is connected to supply water for flushing.

The connection between the WC outlet and the soil pipe must be properly sealed to prevent leakage or bad odor.

Installation of Kitchen Sink

The kitchen sink is installed in kitchens for washing utensils and food materials. It is usually made of stainless steel or ceramic. The sink is fixed in a countertop or mounted on brackets.

A tap is installed for water supply, and the sink outlet is connected to a trap and drainage pipe. Proper slope should be maintained in the drain pipe to ensure smooth flow of wastewater.

Inspection of Water Supply System

After installing the sanitary fittings and water supply pipes, the system must be inspected carefully. Inspection ensures that all fittings are installed correctly and there are no defects in the plumbing system.

During inspection, the plumber should check the following:

  • Correct alignment of pipes and fittings.
  • Proper tightening of joints and connections.
  • Correct installation of taps, valves, and fixtures.
  • No visible cracks or damage in pipes and fittings.
  • Proper support and fixing of pipelines.

Inspection helps detect faults before the system is put into regular use.

Testing of Water Supply System

Testing is carried out to confirm that the water supply system is functioning properly. It ensures that the pipes, joints, and fittings can withstand the required water pressure without leakage.

The most common method used for testing is the pressure test. In this test, water is supplied to the pipeline at a specific pressure and the system is observed for leaks or weak joints.

If any leakage is detected, the faulty joint or pipe section must be repaired or replaced before using the system.

Types of Tests

  • Leakage Test: Checks for water leakage at pipe joints and fittings.
  • Pressure Test: Ensures pipes can handle the required water pressure.
  • Flow Test: Confirms proper water flow through taps and fixtures.

These tests help ensure the reliability and safety of the plumbing system.

Maintenance of Sanitary Fittings

Regular maintenance of sanitary fittings is necessary to keep them functioning properly. Taps, pipes, and fixtures should be inspected periodically to detect leaks or blockages. Cleaning the fittings regularly helps maintain hygiene and prevents corrosion or damage.

Any damaged parts such as washers, valves, or seals should be replaced immediately to avoid wastage of water and further problems in the system.

Conclusion

The installation of sanitary fittings and the inspection and testing of the water supply system are important tasks in plumbing work. Proper installation ensures comfort and hygiene in buildings, while inspection and testing guarantee the reliability of the system. A skilled plumber must carefully follow correct procedures during installation and testing to provide a safe and efficient water supply system.
