The Plumber trade under the Craft Instructor Training Scheme (CITS) is a specialized training program designed to develop highly skilled instructors for the plumbing sector. The course is conducted under the guidance of the Directorate General of Training (DGT), Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship, Government of India. The main objective of this course is to prepare qualified instructors who can effectively train future craftsmen in Industrial Training Institutes (ITIs), vocational training centers, and technical institutions across the country.

The Craft Instructor Training Scheme has been operational since the inception of the Craftsmen Training Scheme (CTS). The first instructor training institute was established in the year 1948. Over time, several additional training institutes were established to expand instructor training capacity in India. These institutes are now known as National Skill Training Institutes (NSTIs). Major NSTIs are located in cities such as Ludhiana, Kanpur, Howrah, Mumbai, Chennai, and Hyderabad. These institutions play a vital role in producing qualified instructors for various engineering and non-engineering trades.

The Plumber CITS program is designed as a competency-based training course with a duration of one year. It is intended primarily for individuals who wish to become instructors in the Plumber trade under the Craftsmen Training Scheme. The training program focuses on developing instructional skills along with advanced technical knowledge related to plumbing systems, pipe installation, sanitary fittings, maintenance of water supply systems, and drainage systems.

Objective of the Plumber CITS Course

The main objective of the Plumber CITS course is to develop competent instructors who can train students effectively in plumbing technology. The program aims to build technical expertise, teaching ability, and professional attitudes among trainees so they can guide learners in acquiring practical skills required in the plumbing industry.

This course helps instructors understand modern teaching methodologies, technical training practices, and workshop management techniques. By completing the training, instructors gain the ability to demonstrate plumbing operations, explain theoretical concepts, and supervise students during practical work.

Another important goal of the course is to strengthen the vocational training ecosystem in India by creating a pool of qualified instructors who can deliver quality training to future technicians and skilled workers.

Competency-Based Training Approach

The Plumber CITS course follows a competency-based training approach. This means that trainees are assessed based on their ability to perform specific tasks and demonstrate professional competence. The training program focuses on both theoretical understanding and practical performance.

Trainees are expected to develop strong skills in instructional planning, demonstration techniques, student engagement, and assessment methods. They learn how to design training sessions, prepare lesson plans, and conduct effective demonstrations in the workshop environment.

Through this approach, instructors learn how to transfer hands-on skills to students and ensure that learners achieve industry-relevant competencies.

Development of Instructional Skills

One of the most important aspects of the CITS training program is the development of instructional skills. Trainees are trained to become effective educators who can guide students through theoretical lessons and practical demonstrations.

The course emphasizes teaching techniques such as lesson planning, demonstration methods, student evaluation, and classroom management. Trainees learn how to communicate complex technical concepts in a clear and understandable manner.

Instructors are also trained to encourage active participation from students and create an engaging learning environment. This helps improve the overall quality of vocational education and ensures that trainees gain practical skills required for employment in the plumbing sector.

Focus on Practical Training

Practical training plays a major role in the Plumber CITS program. Plumbing is a skill-based profession that requires hands-on experience with tools, pipes, fittings, and installation techniques. Therefore, the course provides extensive workshop training to ensure that trainees develop strong practical skills.

During the course, trainees learn how to perform various plumbing tasks such as cutting and threading pipes, installing sanitary fittings, assembling pipeline systems, and testing plumbing installations for leaks and pressure.

They also learn how to demonstrate these processes to students in a workshop environment and supervise practical training activities effectively.

Promoting Innovation and Collaboration

The training program encourages innovative teaching practices and collaborative learning. Trainees are encouraged to share ideas, work together in group activities, and develop creative teaching methods.

Collaborative learning helps trainees gain different perspectives and enhances their ability to solve technical problems. It also helps instructors develop communication skills and teamwork abilities that are essential in modern training environments.

Innovation in teaching methods ensures that vocational education remains relevant to changing industry requirements.

Contribution to Skill Development in India

The Plumber CITS course plays a significant role in strengthening the skill development framework of India. Skilled plumbing professionals are essential for infrastructure development, construction projects, urban water management, and sanitation systems.

By training competent instructors, the program ensures that future generations of technicians receive high-quality training in plumbing technology. This contributes to the development of a skilled workforce capable of meeting the demands of modern industries.

The program also supports national initiatives aimed at improving vocational education and promoting employment opportunities in technical trades.

Career Opportunities

After successfully completing the Plumber CITS course, trainees can work as instructors in Industrial Training Institutes (ITIs), vocational training centers, and technical institutes. They may also find opportunities in skill development programs, training organizations, and technical education institutions.

Experienced instructors can contribute to curriculum development, training program design, and industry-oriented skill development initiatives. Their expertise helps improve the quality of training provided to future plumbers and technicians.

Conclusion

The Plumber CITS course is an important training program designed to develop skilled instructors for the plumbing trade. By combining technical expertise with modern teaching methodologies, the course prepares trainees to deliver effective vocational education in the plumbing sector.

Through competency-based training, practical workshop experience, and instructional skill development, the program ensures that graduates become capable trainers who can guide students toward successful careers in plumbing and related industries.
