Preparation of Mortars with Various Materials of Varying Composition

Mortar is one of the most important materials used in masonry and plumbing construction work. It is a mixture of binding materials such as cement or lime, fine aggregates like sand, and water. Mortar is mainly used to bind bricks or stones together, fill gaps between construction materials, and provide a smooth finish to walls and floors.

In plumbing work, mortar is frequently used when installing pipelines inside walls or floors. After placing pipes or fittings, mortar is used to close the openings and restore the masonry surface. Therefore, students of the ITI Plumber trade must understand how mortar is prepared using different materials and compositions.

Concept of Mortar

Mortar acts as a binding material that holds bricks, stones, and blocks together in construction. It also helps distribute loads evenly across the structure and improves the durability of masonry work. Mortar should be strong enough to hold materials together while also providing good workability for easy application.

The basic ingredients of mortar include:

  • Binding material: Cement, lime, or a mixture of both.
  • Fine aggregate: Usually sand.
  • Water: Required to create a workable paste.

The proportion of these materials varies depending on the type of mortar required and the purpose of construction.

Types of Mortars Based on Binding Material

Mortars are classified according to the type of binding material used. The most common types include cement mortar, lime mortar, and composite mortar.

1. Cement Mortar

Cement mortar is prepared by mixing cement, sand, and water. It is the most widely used mortar in modern construction because of its strength and durability.

Cement mortar is commonly used for brick masonry, plastering walls, fixing plumbing pipelines, and repairing damaged structures.

Common Cement Mortar Ratios

  • 1:3 (Cement : Sand) – Used for strong masonry work.
  • 1:4 – Used for bricklaying and plastering.
  • 1:6 – Used for general construction work.

The materials are thoroughly mixed until a uniform dry mixture is formed, and then water is added gradually to produce a workable paste.

2. Lime Mortar

Lime mortar is prepared using lime as the binding material instead of cement. It is one of the oldest types of mortar used in construction. Although cement mortar is more common today, lime mortar is still used in some traditional buildings.

Lime mortar is prepared by mixing slaked lime, sand, and water. The typical proportion used is:

  • 1:2 (Lime : Sand)
  • 1:3 (Lime : Sand)

Lime mortar provides good workability and flexibility, which helps reduce cracks in masonry structures.

3. Composite Mortar

Composite mortar is prepared by mixing both cement and lime along with sand and water. This type of mortar combines the strength of cement with the workability of lime.

A common composition used in composite mortar is:

  • 1:1:6 (Cement : Lime : Sand)

Composite mortar is often used in plastering work and masonry where both strength and smooth finishing are required.

Materials Used in Mortar Preparation

Proper selection of materials is essential for preparing good-quality mortar. The following materials are commonly used:

Cement

Cement acts as the main binding material in cement mortar. It hardens when mixed with water and provides strength to the mortar.

Lime

Lime improves the workability of mortar and helps produce a smoother finish. It is often used in combination with cement.

Sand

Sand is the fine aggregate used in mortar preparation. Clean and well-graded sand should be used to ensure good bonding and strength.

Water

Water activates the binding materials and helps form a workable paste. Clean water should be used to avoid contamination of the mixture.

Procedure for Preparing Mortar

The preparation of mortar involves a systematic process to ensure that the mixture is uniform and workable. The following steps are generally followed:

  1. Measure the required quantities of cement, lime, and sand according to the specified ratio.
  2. Spread the sand evenly on a clean mixing surface.
  3. Add cement or lime to the sand.
  4. Mix the materials thoroughly in dry form until the mixture becomes uniform in color.
  5. Add water gradually while mixing.
  6. Continue mixing until a smooth and workable paste is obtained.

The prepared mortar should be used within a short period of time before it begins to set and harden.

Uses of Mortar in Plumbing Work

Mortar is widely used in plumbing-related masonry work. Some common applications include:

  • Fixing pipelines inside walls and floors.
  • Repairing wall surfaces after pipe installation.
  • Constructing drainage chambers and inspection pits.
  • Plastering walls around plumbing fittings.
  • Securing pipe supports and brackets.

Properly prepared mortar ensures that the plumbing system is securely installed and the building structure remains strong.

Precautions During Mortar Preparation

Certain precautions must be followed to ensure the quality of mortar:

  • Use clean sand free from dust and organic materials.
  • Measure materials accurately according to the required ratio.
  • Mix the ingredients thoroughly.
  • Use clean water for mixing.
  • Do not use mortar that has already started to set.

Following these precautions helps produce durable and reliable mortar for construction work.
